Who We Are
School Lunch Association
At the School Lunch Association, we believe that every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and reach their potential—starting with a hot, nutritious meal each school day. Since 1989, we’ve been breaking down barriers to education by making sure no child goes hungry at school.
Our Story
Our journey began over 35 years ago, in response to a pressing need identified by an interchurch group in St. John’s. Their 1988 report, “Poverty: The One Thing Money Can’t Buy,” revealed that many children from low-income families were missing school simply because there wasn’t enough food at home. Determined to find a solution, a passionate group called The Committee for Hungry Children formed, with support from the provincial government.
On November 6, 1989, the very first School Lunch program was launched at Bishop Feild Elementary in St. John’s. That day, 147 hot lunches were served to every student in the school—no questions asked, no child left out. It was a small but significant step, and it sparked a movement that continues to grow to this day.
Our Mission
We are a registered charity dedicated to providing healthy, affordable, and non-stigmatizing lunches to children across Newfoundland and Labrador. Our core mission is simple: feed children, fuel learning, and build brighter futures. We achieve this through a unique pay-what-you-can model, ensuring that every family—regardless of financial situation—can participate. Payment amounts remain confidential, so no child ever feels singled out or excluded.
Our Impact
From one school and 147 meals in 1989, the School Lunch Association now serves 46 schools across the province, delivering over 7,100 hot, nutritious meals every school day. That’s more than 1.2 million meals annually, thanks to the trust and support of families, schools, staff, and community partners.
Every lunch tray is filled with healthy options that follow provincial nutrition guidelines, and every child is encouraged to try something new. Our approach not only addresses hunger, but also nurtures confidence, social inclusion, and a stronger focus in the classroom.
How It Works
Families register online and order meals in advance, paying whatever amount they can afford—whether that’s the suggested price or any other amount. For those without internet access, support is available by phone. Our staff handle every step, from menu planning and food preparation to delivery and coordination with each school, so that every child gets a great lunch, every day.
Sustained By Community
While our program is powered by dedicated staff and efficient operations, our continued growth relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community organizations. Donations, grants, and fundraising efforts help us bridge the gap as costs rise and more children need support. Every contribution helps ensure that no child goes hungry at school.
Be Part of the Change
Whether you’re a parent, a supporter, a donor, or an advocate, your involvement matters. When you choose to support the School Lunch Association, you’re helping us reach more children and families across Newfoundland and Labrador. Together, we’re not just providing meals—we’re investing in a healthier, more hopeful future for every child.
A nutritious lunch today means a promising tomorrow.
